Great Product Runs very cool, quiet
So I initially wished to purchase an external hard drive as opposed to an enclosure/internal hd but since I am planning on building a new desktop soon it made more sense to go with the latter. As I stated in the title this product is fantastic, cooling is great, the whatever sound (if any) is obliterated by the sound of my laptop fan. It currently houses a WD640gig 7200rpm drive and is doing fine.

Nice styling, works fine minor design quibbles....
This purchased was part of an extended troubleshooting effort for a Western Digital My Book external hard drive that suddenly bricked; I wanted to test the WD hard drive in a new enclosure to see if it was the platter or interface circuitry that was the issue. I uninstalled the WD drive out of its original case and installed it in the Antec MX-1 to complete the diagnosis..

This is a nice looking plastic/hard rubber case. Like many other hard drive enclosures, the power switch is inexplicably located on the rear of the enclosure.

During the drive install, you will remove and then replace a total of seven screws (one for the top cover, one for the fan plate and four for the drive itself). Other reviews have commented on issues with the fan plate screws; I didn't find access a major PITA, but a long shaft screwdriver and tweezers (or a small item pick-up tool will make the job easier).

The enclosure is very quiet, and there's no obvios disk activity light (the LED is very small and subdued).

Finally: even though the instructions are text-free pictographs, they are among the best I've ever seen (a far cry from Ikea offerings!).

Works well, good design
A nice actively-cooled design. In a short test, the exterior of the case didn't get warm at all.

Connectors all fit snugly, there's a front activity LED, and the design inside is nice, the drive drops into place and slides back to connect, no fumbling with shortie cables inside a cramped case. It's not completely silent but not very loud either.

The vents for the case are not shrouded, if you used your MX-1 regularly the inside of the case may get gunk inside (eg, pethair).

Also, the USB connection will not function if an eSATA cable is connected to the case (even if it's not connected on the PC side). Remove the cable entirely to use it in USB mode. (there's a diagram in the directions indicating this but it wasn't totally clear)

Decent case, good purchase like most gear made by Antec.

Looks good
I purchased the drive enclosure, but I didn't order the right one. This enclosure is handsome and I'm sure it will do the job.

Worth more than the purchase price.
I had a 2001 Dell laptop that died back in July 2007. I was really upset because thought I lost five years worth of manuscripts, cover art, and over 300 mp3s when the motherboard wouldn't turn on.

Thankfully, the 10 GB hard drive still worked. While I kept the Hard drive and junked the laptop I searched for over a year (on public computers) for a way to get back my old information and found this enclosure on Amazon.com. I did a bit more research on compatiblity (ATA/IDE) interface and thanks to Sabrent's 2.5" USB Hard drive enclosure I was able to retrieve all my manuscripts, cover art mp3s and even all my Amazon movie reviews.

Sabrent's USB drive works great with Windows XP. After you put your old Hard drive in the enclosure, you just plug it in and it automatically recognizes it just like any USB disk. If you have an old hard drive from an old computer or a junked computer, this is a great way to get the old data off your computer.

This little case is worth far more than the purchase price. I recommend it to anyone who needs to salvage an older hard drive or who wants to turn an old hard drive into a USB device.

DO NOT BUY
It says that it is compatible with XP but it does not work. I plugged it in and the lights showed the drive was spinning but it never showed up on my computer as a usable drive

Works but pieces don't fit together
I bought two of these enclosures. Both work as advertised for my Macbook drives. BUT the main body is supposed to attach to the black end cap with two small screws. For both of my enclosures the screws didn't fit no matter how hard I tried. Poor quality construction.

There are other enclosures that are cheaper and better. I'm buying two of those to replace these. Hope you don't make the same mistake...
Poor consruction-Does not fit some drives
This enclosure does not fit some of the thicker 2.5 drives. You would have to force my WD 250gb drive into it. I was not willing to do that, so I cannot tell you wheter it would have worked or not.
Good product
This drive enclosure is one of the higher quality cases I have purchased. From what I can tell, it appears to be made from solid aluminum, with the front and back in plastic. Installation, and setup was easy, there were no extra drivers or software to install just plug-n-play.
A few things I dislike about the unit are; there is no fan. This is not a big deal unless you are going to access the drive repeatedly for a several hours. When the hard drive itself is being accessed there is a lot of heat the builds up, but when you just have it plugged in idling there is no problem. The USB cable provided for data transfer has two Male plugs, which I suspect is for users with computers without USB 2.0. I had no problem using a regular USB cable I had laying around instead of the provided one, so this is not an issue for 90% of computers out there. My final issue, is the directions or somewhat vague, there is very little support provided in the booklet. A reminder for anyone not tech-savvy, the hard drive you are using with this device must be formatted. If you purchased a brand new hard drive, or intent to use a new one you need to format it. I work with computers a lot and it slipped my mind at first (it is also not mentioned in the instructions).
Overall, I would definitely recommend this to anyone. Can't beat Amazon's prices.

Unimpressive
I purchased two. Both were defective. On the first one, the device was not recognized by Windows. The second one worked, sort of. Windows always recognized it, but then it would flake out while accessing the drive. These problems occurred with two different drives, so it wasn't the drives, it was the enclosures.

Fit is poor (OK, its cheap), and the manufacturing tolerances on the aluminum part of the case seem to vary widely. Some reviewers claim their drives don't fit (case too small), while my cases were too large, allowing too much slop. Screws held that in check, but that isn't what the screws on a drive are meant to do. Eventually they will strip out.

Access on the one unit that worked was slow. There was a 7200 RPM screamer in there, but you'd never know.

Others have noted the lack of ventilation and the lack of power down timers. Ditto here.

Stay away. If your data is worth anything at all, then buy something you think will work. This one won't.
It works great for the price
For the price paid this was a great purchase. It worked first time and was very easy to use.
worth the wait and twice the price
The product is sturdy easy to install. I use it for multiple hard drives I have lying around. Notable: comes with baby phillips screwdriver and was just instantaneous to set up. I did have to wait for it but only a few days compared to what it said on the screen. I bought another model that was more money but available now and it is a royal pain in the you know what to work with. This unit, however, was worth the wait and twice the price.

Too Risky - LaCie Drive Crash
I purchase a LaCie 1TB Big Disk Extreme (w/USB & Firewire). Initially I was very impressed with the product. Packaging is sturdy and all the features seemed to be well thought out. Within three weeks, one of the internal disks crashed and all the data on the drive had to be recovered by a professional recovery service. (My fault for not having another backup of some of the data.)

I shared this experience with some friends and although not many had used LaCie drives, two LaCie owners had the same experience. One of them is still using his for a door stop. I was very pleased with Amazon.com in the way they handled the return. I couldn't get it back within the 30 day window since it had to be shipped off to a recovery service but they entered an exception and will process a full refund.

If you insist on buying a LaCie drive, make sure you do it through Amazon and have it backed up well. It's not a drive upon which I'd like to depend.

I had multiple problems with this drive
I've had multiple problems with this drive and would recommend that you look at alternatives. About 9 months after purchasing the drive, it froze up on my. Could not get it to respond after rebooting and you could hear a "click, click, click" sound coming from it. I contacted LaCie support, they diagnosed the problem as a bad power supply, and sent me a new one. LaCie support was very good and have nothing but praise for it. However, the drive went bad on me again, this time all my shares went bad, and again I cannot access the admin area for the drive. Since the drive is now out of warranty, I'm out of luck. All of my backups and other stored data is forever gone. I can't tell you how much I lost. Years of digital photos, archived music, documents all gone. I would not trust all my digital personal possessions to a LaCie device again.

Definitely Durable
This is definitely the most durable external hd I have ever had or seen. I am currently deployed and whenever you move, your bags get tossed around and this has taken a beating. I haven't lost any data.

Works like a charm
This expander was easy to install; after all, how hard is it to find the right connector on TiVo, and plug in the AC adapter? It took a restart or two for TiVo to recognize that the expander was attached, but after that, the only "problem" was that TiVo never deleted ANY old stuff because it didn't run out of room! No more looking for an old program, only to find that it has been deleted to make room for newer stuff...

Easy "Plug & Play"
I purchased this product because my HD-Tivo only had about 20 hours
of recording space. With the recent Olympics and my regular programs,
I couldn't watch them all before they were getting deleted. This
recommended DVR Expander was very easy to install. Just 2 plugs
and a quick auto-configuring by the Tivo unit and it was ready to
go in about 20 minutes. Now I have an 80 hour HD video bank.

Good product, could be better
This is a very convenient way to expand the recording capacity of your TiVo DVR. It is easy to connect the average user should have no problems. The only caveat is that there is no active cooling so make certain it's in a location where air can circulate. Heat is the enemy of hard drives. I would prefer to see a low speed fan employed to enhance reliability or an alumium case used for better heat dissipation.

While I understand that copy protection issue force sharing recordings across the primary drive and this expander, as others have noted if either drive dies you lose most/all you recorded material.

For those TiVo Series 3 owners out there, your options are not limited to this expander. Any eSATA external hard drive will work. For everyone else, thank TiVo for making this your only convenient option.

backup for my macbook
I've been running this Iomega for over a month with no problems. I love the plug in and play with my macbook! I'd give it 5 stars except it hasn't withstood the test of time yet for me.

Nearly perfect for my mac.
Just like other reviews, I will say the drive is a little loud when running a backup. This doesn't matter too much, since I only turn it on once a week for only about 30 minutes at a time.

Why do these manufacturers deem it necessary to place a blinding LED in the front of the drive? Are they afraid we can't find it sitting right next to the computer? For crying out loud, the light is extremely bright. It sits behind my iMac, so I don't see the bright light in my face - issue avoided.

I took it right out of the box and it mounted immediately - perfect for a Mac. I didn't have to worry about instructions because it's so easy to set up. Plug the sucker in and turn it on. The iMac recognized the drive immediately and I put Time Machine to good use right away. I bought it last month and have only turned it on about 5 times for a total of 3 hours, so I am not completely sure how long the drive will live. Hard drives will die, especially if you leave them on 24/7.

I totally recommend this drive for Mac users. For PC users, I would recommend you first purchase a Mac...then, purchase this great drive for your backup needs.

UltraMax Perfect Fit for iMac G5
I bought this Iomega UltraMax for my iMac G5 running Leopard 10.5.5. I use it as a place for Time Machine to do backups, as an extra scratch disk for Photoshop, and a storage place for a multitude of images which I use in my work to design greeting cards. Works With Macbook
I went out looking for a Burner i could use with my macbook i already had software but needed to find a burner that was compatible with Mac's i have had this burner for over 2 weeks and have burned probably 30 dvd's no problems it works great and is really quiet plus it can burn up to speeds of 20x this is a great buy.

Best name brand DVD burner for your money
Looks good, works great. Does its job fast and efficient. A bit nosy though, but not nosier than your harddrive's fan.

Works like a charm
This expander was easy to install; after all, how hard is it to find the right connector on TiVo, and plug in the AC adapter? It took a restart or two for TiVo to recognize that the expander was attached, but after that, the only "problem" was that TiVo never deleted ANY old stuff because it didn't run out of room! No more looking for an old program, only to find that it has been deleted to make room for newer stuff...

Easy "Plug & Play"
I purchased this product because my HD-Tivo only had about 20 hours
of recording space. With the recent Olympics and my regular programs,
I couldn't watch them all before they were getting deleted. This
recommended DVR Expander was very easy to install. Just 2 plugs
and a quick auto-configuring by the Tivo unit and it was ready to
go in about 20 minutes. Now I have an 80 hour HD video bank.

Good product, could be better
This is a very convenient way to expand the recording capacity of your TiVo DVR. It is easy to connect the average user should have no problems. The only caveat is that there is no active cooling so make certain it's in a location where air can circulate. Heat is the enemy of hard drives. I would prefer to see a low speed fan employed to enhance reliability or an alumium case used for better heat dissipation.

While I understand that copy protection issue force sharing recordings across the primary drive and this expander, as others have noted if either drive dies you lose most/all you recorded material.

For those TiVo Series 3 owners out there, your options are not limited to this expander. Any eSATA external hard drive will work. For everyone else, thank TiVo for making this your only convenient option.

WELL RIGHT OUT OF BOX,THERE WERE NO LIGHTS.SETUP VERY EASY,JUST DO NOT LEAVE PLUGGED IN FOR A LONG TIME(5 OR 6HRS.)IT STARTED DELETING FILES,LUCKILY IT SHOWS ON THE TOOLBAR,AT FIRST I THOUGHT NOTHING OF IT,BECAUSE I DIDN'T RECOGNIZE THE FILE,BUT THEN I NOTICED IT WAS DELETING MY RESTORE FILES.I TOOK IT OFF THE SYSTEM AND UNPLUGGED IT.I THEN CHECKED MY RESTORE AND ALL THE CHECKPOINTS WERE GONE.I NOW JUST PLUG IT IN WHEN I AM GOING TO USE IT.

Hard Drive Back Up
This item was received in good shape, was easy to install and works well. The only problem I have with it is trying to find a way to have it back up a network drive.

Perfect storage device
It is very light weight, easy to use. I use it on linux, vista and xp and works like a charm. I have seen transfer rates of 10MBps till now, though it claims 60MBps. 10MBps is fast enough. Also, I love the way the long and slim orange LED blinks when data is being transferred.
I take a star off because I wished it looked and felt more sturdier, the plastic casing seems little cheap to me, but not a big issue as it is primarily intended for indoor usage with minimal movement.

Conclusion: A great product and for 90bucks, it is a steal.
Recommended: YES!!

Is a good power button too much to ask for?
This drive seems to work well in both (ubuntu) Linux and Mac OS X after re-formatting it to FAT32 format. Its lack of a power button makes it very hard to tell whether it's on or off after disconnecting it from the computer. That's because sometimes you hear the fan running after being disconnected (or unmounted) and sometimes you don't hear the fan running after disconnection. The so-called power button is a big joke! I wonder which engineers at Seagate thought it was good enough. It works erratically and it's essentially worthless if connecting the drive to the computer after connecting it to the mains supply causes the computer to automatically detect the drive. It would have been wiser to have a mechanical switch if the intent was to have a switch that actually works. In this age of consciousness on energy conservation I think Seagate should have been more deliberate on how to power down the device and power up the device whether or not it's connected to a computer. The device "flanks the test" in this regard.

A lot of problems...
A lot of problems, it freeze every time I try to transfer files and I have to turn off the device and turn it on again, is a painful problem.

Junk, junk, junk...Beaware!!!
A year ago I bought one of these. After several months it started to give me this message (can't access because of hardware failure )!!!!
I have no idea how to solve this and I have already more than 400gb of important stuff on it. Thanks for Seagate production. This is my worst nightmare.
